Wild & Whole Krill Oil

Wild & Whole Krill Oil

Barlean's Organic Oils

Overview

Barlean's Wild & Whole Krill Oil provides a source of an effective omega-3, EPA and DHA, in a highly bioavailable phospholipid form, along with astaxanthin. While the ingredients are well-researched, the specific dosages of EPA and DHA per serving are lower than optimal for significant health benefits in some areas of research, particularly for EPA. The astaxanthin dose is common for krill oil, but on the lower end for potential clinical benefit from the astaxanthin alone.

The Good

Enhanced Bioavailability: Phospholipid-bound omega-3s in krill oil may be better absorbed and utilized by the body compared to standard fish oil.

Inclusion of Astaxanthin: Provides additional antioxidant benefits beyond omega-3s.

MSC Certified Sustainable: Ensures responsible and ethical sourcing of krill.

The Bad

Suboptimal EPA and DHA Dosing: The combined EPA and DHA dosage (205mg) is significantly lower than recommended for many cardiovascular or other health benefits.

Low Astaxanthin Dose: While present, the 100mcg dose is lower than what's often used in research for significant antioxidant or anti-inflammatory effects.

Contains Shellfish: Not suitable for individuals with shellfish allergies.

Is it for you?

Best For: Individuals seeking Omega-3s for cardiovascular, cognitive, and joint health; those preferring krill oil over fish oil for bioavailability.

Skip If: You have seafood allergies, are pregnant or nursing without consulting a doctor, or are on blood-thinning medications.
