How it works

The primary mechanism of action involves reducing sodium chloride intake, which lowers extracellular fluid volume and vascular resistance, thereby reducing blood pressure. Sodium and potassium ions from sea salt powder are readily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, influencing sodium and potassium ion channels and transporters involved in blood pressure regulation.

Side effects

Salt substitutes with reduced sodium and increased potassium are generally safe for most populations. Common side effects are not consistently reported in high-quality trials. Uncommon side effects (1-5%) include potential hyperkalemia risk, particularly in patients with kidney impairment or those on potassium-sparing medications. Rare side effects (<1%) involve severe hyperkalemia in susceptible individuals. Caution is advised with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and ARBs.
